While Lions Dust Off Their Toughness Blueprint, Can the Titans Finally Build the Gritty Foundation That Wins in January?

You know, I've been watching football for a long time, and I'll tell you what I know to be true: championships don't get won in September, they get won in December when the weather turns nasty and the lights come on in cold stadiums where men have to be men. That's just football. That's the way it's always been, and that's the way it always will be. When I see what's happening around the league right now with teams getting back to basics, getting back to playing tough nasty football, it makes me think real hard about what the Tennessee Titans are doing and whether we've finally figured out how to build the kind of team that can win when the stakes are highest.

The Lions had themselves quite a rude awakening last season. They came into things with all kinds of flash and firepower, thought they were going to light up the scoreboard and dance their way through the playoffs, and instead they hit a wall so hard it probably left a dent. Now they're looking at their roster, looking at how they lost football games, and they're coming to a realization that's been hitting teams in this league for decades: you cannot win sustained success without toughness. You cannot win without players who will run through a brick wall for you. You cannot win without an offensive line that dominates the point of attack and a defense that makes people feel physical pain when they try to move the ball. The Lions are getting back to grit. They're getting back to nasty. And you know what? That's the conversation every team needs to have, especially our Tennessee Titans.

Look, I've watched the Titans struggle to find their identity for way too long now. We've had some talented players come through here. We've had moments where we looked like we could be something special. But here's what I keep coming back to: winning football teams have a certain feel to them. They have an edge. They have a quarterback who can manage the game, an offensive line that can move people, running backs who will lower their shoulder, receivers who will fight for balls, a defensive line that penetrates, and linebackers who fly around making tackles. That's football. That's always been football. The Titans need to understand what the Lions are learning right now, and they need to learn it fast before another year of our window closes.

Think about the great Titans teams from the past. Think about those squads that made runs to the Super Bowl. Jeff Fisher understood something fundamental about winning football. He understood that you build from the inside out. You start with your offensive line. You give yourself a running game. You build a defense that can pressure the quarterback. You don't win by trying to be slick. You don't win by trying to be trendy. You win by being tougher than the other guy and by executing the fundamentals better than anybody else on the field. Those teams had an identity. You could feel it. When you watched them play, you knew exactly what they were about. They were about overpowering you. They were about wearing you down. They were about making you feel the hit.

The Lions woke up to that reality, and now they're making moves to get back to it. They're looking at their roster construction and asking themselves the hard questions. Are we tough enough up front? Do we have enough guys who will compete on every single play? Are we built to win in December when the football is slippery and the defense can really latch on to you? Those are the questions that separate champions from pretenders. Those are the questions that separate teams that talk about making the playoffs from teams that actually know how to win once they get there.

For the Titans, this is a critical moment. We're at a crossroads. We need to look at what works in this league and what doesn't, and we need to have the courage to build the right way, not the easy way. Building a tough football team takes time. It takes commitment to certain principles. It means sometimes you're not going to have the flashiest offense in the league. It means sometimes your quarterback isn't going to throw for 350 yards a game. It means sometimes you're going to win games 17 to 14, and you're going to be satisfied as all get out because you out-toughed somebody. That's football. That's what wins.

I think about teams like the Kansas City Chiefs and how they've built their organization. Now yes, they've got Patrick Mahomes, and that's fantastic. But what makes them tick? What makes them special? They've got an offensive line that dominates. They've got a running game that can control the clock. They've got a defense that has pedigree and toughness. When you watch them play, you see an organization that knows what it is. You see players who understand their role. You see coaches who have a system and stick to it. That's the blueprint. That's what wins Super Bowls.

The Lions made a step backward last year, and now they're taking inventory. They're asking themselves what went wrong, and a big part of that answer is that they didn't have the toughness foundation that wins championships. They had some talented people, but they didn't have enough guys willing to get in a phone booth and fight. Well, the Titans have a chance to learn from that example without having to take that step backward ourselves. We can look at what didn't work for other teams and build the right way from the jump.

When you look at roster construction moving forward, every decision matters. Every pick matters. Every free agent signing matters. Are we getting tougher? Are we getting more physical? Are we building a team that can line up in December and say we're going to beat you at the point of attack? That's the test. That's always the test. I've watched football my whole life, and that test never changes. It doesn't matter what year it is. It doesn't matter what the modern NFL looks like. If you're not tough, if you're not physical, if you don't have guys who will run through walls for you, you're not going to win the important games. That's just the way it is.

The Lions are recommitting to something fundamental. They're saying we got away from what we should be doing, and we're getting back to it. The Titans need to make sure we're on that same path. We need to make sure that when we're making decisions in the draft room and in free agency, we're asking ourselves: Does this make us tougher? Does this make us more physical? Does this help us win in December? Those should be the guiding questions. Not how many three receivers can we line up. Not how many exotic formations can we run. But how tough are we? How physical are we? How well can we execute in the cold when it matters most?

For Titans fans, this should matter to you tremendously. Because at the end of the day, we all want the same thing. We want to see our team win. We want to see a Super Bowl championship brought to Tennessee. That doesn't happen by accident. That doesn't happen by trying to out-scheme everybody. That happens because you build a team with the right identity, the right toughness, and the right character. The Lions are learning that lesson. The Titans need to make sure we're not just learning it but living it every single day in how we build our roster and how we play football. That's what it takes. That's always what it takes. And that's why this moment matters so much for our football team and our fans who deserve a winner.
