Three Weeks In and the Rams Are Still Building Something Real While the League Panics Around Them

You know what I love about football? It's the fact that everybody wants to overreact after three games. Three games! That's like watching the first quarter of a sixteen quarter game and saying you know how the whole thing's gonna end. But here we are in Week 3, and the panic buttons are getting mashed all over this league like it's the fourth quarter of a playoff game and your team's down by twenty. The Chargers are in crisis. The Patriots are falling apart. The Packers are fading. And meanwhile, everybody's waiting to see if the Rams are gonna join the dumpster fire club. Well, let me tell you something: the Los Angeles Rams are gonna be just fine, and I'll tell you why.

But first, we gotta talk about this panic that's sweeping through NFL towns like a dust storm through Oklahoma. See, this happens every single year without fail. We get through the first three weeks of the season, some teams that everybody thought were gonna be contenders stumble a little bit, and suddenly the sky is falling. The national media starts writing obituaries. The hot take artists are working overtime. Fans are throwing their hands up in the air like they just don't care anymore. It's a beautiful thing to watch if you're not the one going through it, and it's absolutely maddening if you are.

The thing about September and early October is that it's the cruelest time in football because it's when the reality starts to creep in on all those dreams you had about your team during the offseason. You spent all summer thinking about how your team made all the right moves, how this was the year, how everything was gonna click, and then the games start and the tape doesn't lie. Sometimes your team looks like you thought it would. Sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes injuries happen. Sometimes your quarterback has an off day. Sometimes your defensive scheme isn't quite clicking yet. That's football, baby. That's the beautiful, brutal reality of this game.

Now, the Chargers, they're dealing with some real issues over there in Los Angeles. You got a young quarterback in Justin Herbert who's still figuring things out. You got some roster construction questions. You got some injury concerns. That's the kind of stuff that makes people nervous, and rightfully so. But it's Week 3. The Chargers have fourteen games left to play. Fourteen! A lot can change. A lot always changes. I've seen teams come back from worse starts than what the Chargers are dealing with. I've seen teams that looked like world beaters in Week 3 fizzle out completely by November. This league is too long and too unpredictable for anybody to be drawing final conclusions three weeks in.

The Patriots are another one that everybody's ready to write off. You got a new quarterback situation, some uncertainty on offense, and the rest of the AFC East looking pretty strong. Again, that's legitimate stuff to worry about. But here's the thing about the Patriots: that organization knows how to win. That coaching staff knows what they're doing. Bill Belichick built an empire on the principle of not panicking, of staying the course, of trusting the process. Now, the Patriots might not be what they once were. They might not win the division. They might not make the playoffs. But to act like they're finished three weeks into a seventeen game season is exactly the kind of thinking that gets you burned in this league.

The Packers, now that's interesting because you got Aaron Rodgers over there, and Aaron Rodgers can make anybody look foolish if you write him off too early. The Packers might be struggling with some things right now, but they got the most talented quarterback in the world throwing the football. They got receivers. They got coaching. Fourteen games is a long time for things to turn around.

And then you got the Rams, and this is where I want to focus my energy because the Rams are actually in a pretty good position compared to what people are thinking. See, the Rams have been through some stuff. They've had some injury concerns. They've had to make some adjustments. But when you look at what Sean McVay is doing, when you look at the pieces he's got around Matthew Stafford, when you look at the overall construction of that roster, there's no reason to panic.

The Rams are built to win right now. They're not built to tank. They're not built to develop. They're built to go out there and compete and win football games. The roster construction reflects that. The salary cap situation reflects that. The way Sean McVay is piecing things together on the field reflects that. And three weeks into a season, when you're still dealing with some injury situations and guys getting back to full health, you gotta have patience.

I think about the great teams I've seen over the years, and you know what they all had in common? They didn't panic when things were going a little sideways early on. They stayed the course. They trusted their system. They knew that football is a long season and that there's time to correct things. The Rams have got that kind of structure and that kind of coaching.

Here's what matters for fans of teams that are struggling right now. You gotta understand that Week 3 is not the same as Week 12 or Week 17. You gotta understand that injuries heal. You gotta understand that young players develop. You gotta understand that schemes click when guys get more reps together. You gotta understand that sometimes your team's gonna look a little rough around the edges early on and then turn it around and play excellent football.

For Rams fans specifically, you should care about this because it means you can still believe in what you've got. It means you can still trust the process. It means you can still expect your team to compete for a playoff spot and potentially do some damage in January. The Rams have the pieces. They have the coaching. They have the quarterback. What they need is time and health. They need some of their guys to get back on the field. They need the chemistry to continue to build. And with fourteen games left, there's plenty of time for all of that to happen.

So don't panic. Don't get caught up in the doom and gloom that the national media is spewing out there. Football is a long game, and three weeks in is not the time to be writing anybody's epitaph.
