Week 4 Report Card: Where the Colts Stand While the AFC South Shuffles and the Playoff Picture Gets Clearer

You know, football is a funny thing. One week you think you got it all figured out, and the next week somebody comes along and shows you that you don't know nothing about nothing. That's what Week 4 did to us this season, folks. It shuffled the deck, it changed some narratives, and it made us Colts fans sit back and really think about where we're headed in this thing. We're not that far into the season, but we're far enough along that the real teams are starting to separate themselves from the pretenders, and we need to take a hard look at where Indianapolis fits into that equation.

Let me tell you something about grades and what they really mean. When you grade an NFL team in a single week, you're taking a snapshot of what they did in that moment, but you're also telling a story about where they're going. The Bears got themselves an A-minus grade this week despite losing some key pieces to injury, and you know what that tells you? That tells you Ben Johnson is doing something special with that offense. That tells you that Chicago has got something brewing, and they're not going to be a pushover when we face them down the line. Meanwhile, the Bengals are slipping, and that's a story that should make every team in the AFC take notice because when a team like Cincinnati starts sliding, somebody else gets to pick up those wins.

So where do the Colts fit into all this? That's the million-dollar question, and it's the one that keeps me up at night thinking about this team's future.

Indianapolis has got to be kicking themselves right now when they look at the rest of the AFC South and see what's happening around them. You've got teams making moves, you've got teams figuring things out, and you've got teams that are clearly building toward something special. The Colts, meanwhile, are in that critical spot where every single week matters more than the last one. This is the part of the season where you find out if you're built to compete or if you're built to rebuild. There's no middle ground anymore. There's no "we'll turn it on later." Later is now.

When I think about what separates a team that gets an A-grade from a team that gets a C-grade, it's not always about winning big. Sometimes it's about execution. It's about doing the little things right. It's about having a plan and executing that plan even when things get tough. The Bears showed that this week. They lost players, important players, but they didn't lose their identity. They didn't lose their focus. That's the kind of thing that makes a difference in the long run, and that's the kind of thing that the Colts organization needs to be thinking about right now.

Look back at some of the great Colts teams. When we had Peyton Manning, we didn't always dominate every single game, but we knew who we were. We had a system, and we executed that system. We had players who believed in what we were doing, and they bought in completely. That's what separates good teams from great teams. That's what separates teams that make the playoffs and get bounced early from teams that go deep in January and February. The question for Indianapolis right now is whether this roster is built to do that, and whether the coaching staff knows how to get the most out of the pieces they've got.

The draft position matters here too, and it matters more than people realize. If the Colts are looking at Week 4 and thinking, "We might not be where we need to be," then that's a conversation about what kind of roster needs you've got moving forward. Are we one piece away? Are we two pieces away? Are we a team that needs to strip it down and start building something new? Those are harsh questions, but they're honest questions, and in football you have to be honest with yourself or you'll never get where you want to go.

I've watched a lot of football over the years, and I've seen teams make incredible runs from worse positions than the Colts are in right now. I've also seen teams stay stuck in mediocrity because they never made the hard decisions when they had the chance. Indianapolis has got to decide right now which path they're going to take. Are you going to commit fully to the guys you've got and make the adjustments necessary to win with this roster? Or are you going to acknowledge that maybe there are some fundamental issues that need to be addressed in the draft and through free agency?

What kills me about situations like this is that sometimes the difference between a team that gets an A-minus and a team that gets a B-plus comes down to execution in moments that don't seem like they matter at the time. A penalty here, a missed throw there, a defensive breakdown in the third quarter when everybody's tired. These little moments compound, and before you know it, you're looking at teams that are separating themselves from you in the standings. The Bears understand this. The good teams in this league understand this. The Colts need to understand this too.

The AFC South is wide open right now, and that's the honest truth. Nobody's running away with it. That means Indianapolis has got a genuine opportunity to make a run at this thing if they can get their act together. But that window doesn't stay open forever. That window closes pretty quick if you're not careful. In a few weeks, we could be looking at a situation where one team has a two or three game lead and suddenly the pressure changes. The urgency changes. The stakes change. Right now, everything is still possible for Indianapolis. That's not a burden. That's a gift. That's an opportunity.

I think about what it means to be a Colts fan right now, and I think about the legacy of this franchise. We've got great history here. We've got Colts legends who've worn this uniform and done incredible things. We've got a fan base that's passionate and knowledgeable and deserves to see good football. That's what this conversation about Week 4 grades and where we stand is really about. It's about whether this organization is going to do right by the fans who've stuck with them and believed in this team. It's about whether they're going to make the right decisions and execute at the highest level. That's what separates great organizations from the rest of the pack, and that's what every Colts fan should be paying attention to as we move deeper into this season.
