The Sweet Spot: Which NFL Teams Have the Best Chance to Sneak Into January Before Christmas Even Hits

You know what I love about the NFL? It's not always the prettiest team that makes the dance. Sometimes it's the team that's in the right place at the right time with the right matchups, and that's just beautiful football thinking. We're sitting here in the middle of the season looking at the playoff picture, and let me tell you something, there are five teams right now that have what I call a "golden ticket" built into their remaining schedule. These aren't necessarily your Dallas Cowboys or your teams everyone's been talking about since August. These are the teams that if they can take care of business at home and maybe steal one or two on the road, they're going to waltz into the postseason like they belonged there all along.

Let me start with the Lions, because this is a team that's been knocking on the door for years, and now they've got a schedule that's almost cooperating with them. Detroit has been one of the most improved franchises in football, and that's not by accident. When you've got a front office that knows how to build, and you've got a quarterback who can sling it around like they do, good things start happening. The Lions have got some real favorable matchups coming up, and here's the thing about Detroit, they're a team that plays with a chip on their shoulder. They've been doubted, they've been laughed at, and now they're finally getting a chance to prove they belong at the big kids' table. When you combine that mentality with a schedule that doesn't punch you in the mouth every single Sunday, you get a team that can go on a run. The rest of their slate has some real opportunities for them to pick up wins, and I'll tell you what, if the Lions can get to 10 wins, they're playing in January, and they'll deserve every second of it.

The Ravens are another team that's got the kind of pathway that makes a coach smile when he looks at the schedule. Baltimore has always been about that defense, that running game, and making life miserable for opposing offenses. This year they've got some weapons that can actually complement that traditional Ravens football, and their remaining schedule has some teams in it that they match up well against. The AFC North is a bloodbath, we all know that, but outside of division play, there are some real opportunities here. The Ravens have the kind of identity where they can beat anybody on any given Sunday because they don't need to be flashy. They just need to be tough, execute their gameplan, and win the line of scrimmage. When you've got a schedule that gives you more games where you can impose your will on an opponent, that's when you see the Ravens at their best.

Now, I want to talk about something that a lot of people don't think about enough, and that's the difference between a team that's just good and a team that's positioned to make a playoff run. It's not always about talent alone. Sometimes it's about getting the right matchups at the right time, getting a little health back on your roster, and building momentum heading into the stretch run. There are teams right now that have been playing well but haven't necessarily gotten the benefit of favorable scheduling, and then there are teams that are sitting in a position where the rest of their road is smoother than what they've already traveled.

Let me tell you what I'm seeing when I look at these teams with the easier paths. First of all, you've got to have a quarterback who doesn't beat himself. That's the first thing. I don't care if he's the flashiest guy in the league or if he's just a guy who manages the game and lets his team play. He can't turn the ball over in critical moments. He can't make decisions that lose you games. The teams that are positioned well for these favorable matchups are the teams where the quarterback position is settled and reliable.

The second thing you need is depth that can step up. In football, injuries are like taxes. They're inevitable. So when you're looking at a team that has a favorable schedule coming up, you want to see a team that's got some guys on the bench that can step in and not make you feel like you're losing by five touchdowns overnight. The teams we're talking about here, they've got that. They've got the kind of rosters where if somebody goes down, the next guy up is ready to play football.

The third thing, and this is huge, is coaching that understands how to build momentum. You don't just accidentally fall into a favorable schedule and make the playoffs. You've got to be the kind of team that takes advantage of it. You've got to win the games you're supposed to win. You've got to be hungry enough to steal a game you're not supposed to win. And you've got to play well enough late in games that when the chips are down, you're the team making the plays, not the other guy. That's where coaching comes in. That's where having a head coach who's been through the fire, who knows how to keep a team focused and hungry, that's where that pays dividends.

Think about some of the great playoff teams from history. They weren't always the most talented teams. Sometimes they were just teams that got a favorable draw and had the collective will to take advantage of it. I remember teams that people didn't pick to do much in November, and by January they were playing in the Super Bowl. That's because they were positioned right, they had the right mentality, and they got some luck along the way. That's football. That's why we love it. You can't predict everything. You can't control everything. All you can do is put yourself in a position to take advantage of the opportunities in front of you.

What makes this particularly interesting this year is that we're in a league where parity is real. I mean, legitimately real. On any given Sunday, I've seen some shocking results. Teams that everybody thought were done have fought back. Teams that everybody penciled in to be great have stumbled. And in that kind of environment, when you've got a schedule that cooperates with you, that's like finding money in your jacket pocket. You don't question it. You just use it.

The Lions and the Ravens and the other teams that we're talking about here, they need to understand what's in front of them. They need to walk into each stadium knowing that they've got a real opportunity to separate themselves from the pack. In a 17 game season where there are so many teams bunched together, the difference between making the playoffs and watching from home on New Year's Day can come down to winning the games you're supposed to win and maybe one game you're not.

For the fans of these teams, this is exciting. This is the time of year where hope isn't just something for opening day anymore. This is the time where you can actually see a pathway. You can see how your team gets to 10 wins, to 11 wins, to a playoff spot. And that's beautiful. That's why people love football. That's why we gather around the television on Sunday and put our hearts out there. Because for these five teams, January isn't just a dream anymore. It's a realistic destination if they've got the guts to take it.
