Week 1 is Here and It's Time to Separate the Dreamers from the Doers, and Boy Do We Have Some Games

Now listen here, football is finally back, and I mean the real football, the kind where it matters. Week 1 is like Christmas morning for those of us who love this game, except instead of presents under the tree, we got ourselves a whole season of football wrapped up in anticipation and hope. Every team starts 0 and 0, every quarterback gets to throw their first pass like it's a brand new start, and every fan base gets to believe, just for a little while, that this year might be their year. That's what makes Week 1 so special, so I'm gonna tell you what I think is gonna happen in some of these matchups, and more importantly, why it matters.

Let's start with something that's got people talking: Denver and Kansas City. Now, the Broncos edge the Chiefs in my book, and before you start throwing things at your screen, hear me out because this is the kind of game that makes football beautiful. Patrick Mahomes is coming back from injury, and sure, the guy's a wizard with a football. I've seen him do things that make you wonder if he learned to play from aliens or something. But you know what? Week 1 for a guy coming off injury isn't like Week 10 or Week 15. Your body's still waking up. Your timing with receivers is still getting dialed in. Your legs haven't remembered how to move like they did in the offseason.

The Broncos, meanwhile, they're hungry. They've been waiting all offseason to prove something, and when you get a team that's got that kind of edge and you're playing against a quarterback who's just getting his feet under him again, well, that's a recipe for an upset. The Broncos' defense is going to be sharp, fresh, and they're going to come at Mahomes early. I'm not saying he's gonna have a terrible game, but I am saying Denver's got a real shot here. Sometimes the best football games are won by the team that's got the most to prove, and the Broncos definitely fit that bill.

Now over in Las Vegas with the Raiders taking on Miami, this is another one where people might look at me sideways. The Dolphins have been getting a lot of national attention, people talking about them like they're some kind of juggernaut. But here's what I know about Week 1: execution matters more than talent, and preparation matters more than reputation. The Raiders are going to come out of that tunnel with something to prove, and Miami, for all their promise, they're still a team that's trying to figure out who they really are in September.

The Raiders have some weapons, and more importantly, they've got hunger. That's a combination that can beat teams that are supposed to be better on paper. Football isn't played on paper, thank goodness, because if it was, we wouldn't need to actually play the games. The Dolphins are talented, no question about it, but talent without that extra level of sharpness in Week 1 can be dangerous. The Raiders are going to get after them, and I think Vegas is going to surprise some people who aren't paying close enough attention.

This is what makes Week 1 so fantastic, you see? It's not about who has the best talent or who spent the most money in free agency. It's about who shows up ready to play, who understands that Week 1 is about establishing your identity, about telling the rest of the league who you are and what you're made of. Every team that takes the field has been preparing for months, and the teams that execute their game plan best and make the fewest mistakes are the ones that win these early games.

The Seahawks hosting that Super Bowl rematch is another classic Week 1 scenario because Super Bowl rematches are always weird. You've got that history, that bad feeling from whenever they faced off before, and you're trying to recreate that magic or erase that pain. But here's the thing about football: it's a new season, new players, different circumstances. What happened before doesn't always predict what's going to happen now. That's what makes this sport so compelling. You can't just assume the team that won before is going to win again because football is too random, too dependent on execution in the moment, on who makes the fewest mistakes.

I'll tell you what gets me excited about picking games like these: it's the knowledge that I could be completely wrong, and that's what makes football beautiful. I could pick the Broncos to beat the Chiefs, and Mahomes could come out and throw for 400 yards and four touchdowns because he's just that good and Week 1 sharpness doesn't matter as much as I think it does. That's football, baby. That's why we love it. Nothing's guaranteed, nothing's certain, and that uncertainty is what keeps you coming back.

When you're making your picks for Week 1, you've got to think about momentum. Which teams are coming in feeling good about their offseason? Which teams have made real improvements to their roster? Which teams understand that Week 1 is about setting a tone? The Broncos, the Raiders, the Seahawks in their home stadium, these are teams that feel like they're ready to make a statement. That doesn't mean they're definitely going to win, but it means they've got the ingredients to compete at a high level.

I also want you to understand that these early games are about character. Character shows up in Week 1 because nobody's tired yet, nobody's beaten up, and everybody's got that fresh focus that comes with a new season. The Broncos, the Raiders, they're going to play with that kind of edge because they've got something to prove.

The thing about football that John Madden understood better than almost anybody was that the best teams are the ones that play together, that execute the fundamentals, and that don't beat themselves. Week 1 is when you start figuring out which teams have those qualities and which teams don't. So when you look at these games, when you're deciding which way to go with your picks, ask yourself: which team is better prepared? Which team understands that Week 1 is about establishing who you are? Which team is going to execute their game plan and make the fewest mistakes? That's where your picks should be coming from, not from reputation or past success or what people are saying on television.

The Broncos over the Chiefs, the Raiders over the Dolphins, these aren't crazy picks if you understand football. These are picks that make sense if you understand that Week 1 is different, that teams coming in hungry and fresh can compete with anybody, and that execution in those early games matters more than talent on paper. These games are going to matter for your season because they're going to set the tone for everything that comes after. Win Week 1, and you've got confidence. Lose it, and you're climbing uphill from game one. That's why these games matter to the teams, and that's why they should matter to you as a fan.
